Changing colors of our Toon Characters is as easy as pie. You can change the whole look and feel in just a few simple steps. All you need is an editable (Ai) source file that comes with our ultimate pack and Adobe Illustrator software. In this short tutorial we will use the "Smiling Superhero Cartoon Character".

1. Open the vector file with Adobe Illustrator.</h4>
Once you open the "Smiling_Superhero_1_20.ai" file, poses from 1 to 20 will be displayed in separate artboards.

2. Open the "Symbols" panel.</h4>
Our Toon Characters are symbol based. If you don’t know what a symbol in Adobe Illustrator is, and you are not sure how to use it, take a quick look at our article "How to Use a Symbol Library in Adobe Illustrator"

3. Change colors of separate elements.</h4>
Choose an element that needs a color change from the "Symbols" panel and double click to load "Symbol Editing Mode".<br />

Now we need to locate the base color element from the “Layers” panel. Usually, this layer is positioned at the bottom of its group and all effects are above it.<br />

Although our Toon Characters come in sets of 100 poses, it is possible that none of our set poses suit your needs perfectly. So our ultimate pack gives you the option to create your own pose. We’ve described in 3 simple steps how to do that in Adobe Illustrator.<br />

1. Load symbol library.</h4>
Our Toon Characters are symbol based. If you don’t know what a symbol in Adobe Illustrator is, and you are not sure how to use it, take a quick look at our article "How to use symbols in Adobe Illustrator."<br />

2. Drag and drop body parts from the "Symbols" panel to the artboard.</h4>
Once you’ve got our symbol gallery loaded, you just have to select the separate objects and match them together. Drag and drop objects one by one to the artboard in no particular order. For example, take a head, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, arms, hands, body, book and a target.<br />

Now comes the fun part. Just use the mouse or the keyboard arrows to position the elements properly. When combining the different objects, mind the hierarchy, e.g. the eyes should be placed in front of the head. Change the stacking order by using the "Layers" panel or just select the element and press the shortkey "Ctrl + ]" or "Ctr + [".<br />

What is a "Symbol" in Adobe Illustrator?</h3>
Symbols are useful when you have the same object repeating many times in your document. They help us to reduce the file size. For example, if you are about to create a vector image of a forest, you basically have two options. You could either create a tree and then duplicate it numerous times. Or, you could make a symbol and just multiply it.
<br />
In this second way, you can place an unlimited number of instances of this symbol, using only the graphical information of the original tree. This greatly reduces the file size of the document. Furthermore, when you need to update the graphics, you don’t have to go through every object. Just customize the symbol and all instances will be updated automatically.<br />

1. Open the "Symbols" panel.</h4>
Go to "Window -> Symbols" (or use the keyboard shortkey "Shift+Ctrl+F11" for Windows or "Shift + Command + F11" for Mac OS).<br />
