Change Colors of a Toon Character

Changing colors of our Toon Characters is as easy as pie. You can change the whole look and feel in just a few simple steps. All you need is an editable (Ai) source file that comes with our ultimate pack and Adobe Illustrator software. In this short tutorial we will use the "Smiling Superhero Cartoon Character".

1. Open the vector file with Adobe Illustrator.

Once you open the "Smiling_Superhero_1_20.ai" file, poses from 1 to 20 will be displayed in separate artboards.

2. Open the "Symbols" panel.

Our Toon Characters are symbol based. If you don’t know what a symbol in Adobe Illustrator is, and you are not sure how to use it, take a quick look at our article "How to Use a Symbol Library in Adobe Illustrator"

3. Change colors of separate elements.

Choose an element that needs a color change from the "Symbols" panel and double click to load "Symbol Editing Mode".

Now we need to locate the base color element from the “Layers” panel. Usually, this layer is positioned at the bottom of its group and all effects are above it.

Just pick a color from the "Swatches" panel. Make sure that the "Fill" option with solid color is selected from the "Appearance" panel.

We are done, just click the "Esc" key to exit "Symbol Editing Mode" and the color changes will be applied to all poses.

Repeat the same techniques on the rest of the body elements to customize all colors to suit your own taste. Impressive results can be produced in minutes, with a little practice.
